Sisters Empowering Women, Inc.

About Us

We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to giving women and girls of color a space to be heard and know that their voice matters and that they bring value to any space they find themselves in.

We provide a variety of services from mentoring to enrichment workshops to enhance communication skills, build self-confidence, and level the playing field so they have the tools they need to succeed in school and in the workplace. We also provide free journals and encourage them to use the journal as a tool to organize their thoughts and as a safe space to write about how they feel in a world that doesn't always value the thoughts and feelings of women and girls and particularly women and girls of color.

We are dedicated to changing the lives of youth and young adult women in our community.

History

Sisters Empowering Women (SEW) was founded by three sisters wanting to make a difference for girls in their community. The trio, Toni, Karin and Amber were volunteers at their church working with youth and girls in foster care. As they began to get to know the children in care they had a simple question: “What happens to girls in foster care who want to have the same experience as their peers for prom and homecoming?” The answer was heartbreaking. They were forced to wear whatever their caseworker could find.

So they started with Gowns for Girls, in 2002, eventually adding additional programs including a mentoring program, writing workshops and self-esteem building courses.

Today, SEW is working to grow its reach, continuing to provide services to girls and women of color. The sisters believe that too often the voice of our communities of color, particularly our girls, aren’t given the platform, attention and spotlight they deserve. They believe that their experiences, feelings, dreams and struggles deserve validation and attention.

Your donations go along way in increasing the number of clients served. Want to volunteer? SEW is always looking for mentors and speakers ready to make a difference. Contact us to find out the ways you help.
